In China, Japan, Taiwan and Thailand it can often be found in shops and restaurants. The Maneki Neko is supposed to bring good luck and lots of customers. In his right hand he holds the Koban, a gold coin signifying boundless wealth. The Asian Lucky Cat probably originated in Japan in the 17th century. A wealthy landlord took shelter from the storm under a tree. A poor priest's cat lured the lord away and a few moments later the tree was struck by lightning. In gratitude, the landlord made the temple great, rich and successful.
